Mix tape.. almost

I made a mix CD for the first time in what feels like a decade this weekend. No, not an iTunes playlist, I actually burned songs onto a CD-R. Here are a few of the songs that I've been humming since.

Matt Costa - "Mr. Pitiful"
This single was released on iTunes earlier this month. It's tiding me over so far until his new album comes out on January 15th with a bouncing piano riff and punchy bassline, but I'm going to need more Costa, and soon!

Jimmy Eat World - "Big Casino"
Lead singer Jim Adkins incorporates one of the better oxymorons in recent memory into the lyrics: "I'm a New Jersey success story." That's right up there with "freezer burn" and "Microsoft Works."

Wyclef featuring Paul Simon - "Fast Car"
If you thought that Nelly/Tim McGraw song was good, or if you liked the Linkin Park/Jay-Z mashup, you're going to feel embarassed after hearing this. The best collaboration of a hip-hop artist and a white guy in a long time.

Matt Nathanson - "Car Crash"
"Pretty the World" used to be my favorite Matt Nathanson song, but this is quickly trumping it. His lyrics just keep getting hookier and hookier, and his music keeps getting better and better. That's usually a good sign.

Wow, now that I look at that, there seems be a story line. Your life is pitiful, so you decide to head to the casino. You lose all your money so you jump in a car and speed home. Then you get in a car crash.

Great songs although I haven't heard Fast Car yet. Is it a remake of the Tracy Chapman song? Paul Simon is banned from my Zune but maybe I'll make an exception for this one.

On Wednesday night I randomly jumped on Ticketmaster to see who was playing on Thursday night. The list? Jimmy Eat World at one concert and another concert featured The Kin, Pat Mcgee, and Josh Kelley. Grrr... I didn't get to either of those concerts.

I will now resume my attempts to fix that last oxymoron.

I just heard a song called "You Give Me Something" by a guy called James Morrison the other day that caught my ear. I'd never heard of him before but the song sounds like one of those you could bust out on your acoustic to put a smile on the face of a member of the female sex.

Just fyi.

Not a remake, and just enough Paul Simon to make you say "You know, I'm kinda glad he's in this song."

We just missed Matt Nathanson this past Sunday. But we have Brett Dennen/Colbie Callet in Burlington and Matt Costa in Montreal coming up in November. I still think Seattle has the better music scene, but Burlington's is nothing to shake a stick at either.
